February 8, 1984 seemed like any other day for my
family. Our little family went to sleep just as we
did each and every night.
Sometime after midnight - I donít remember the hour - we were awakened by hideous screaming from my 6 year old sonís room. We ran into his room and he was sitting up in his bed, still screaming in terror. I have never seen a child more terrified or hysterical. When he finally managed to calm down, he told us that had seen an angel in his room holding a flaming sword over a man bound tightly in chains. He said the man appeared to be in terrible pain and was screaming; Nathan could not hear the screams - he could only see his mouth moving and the torment and pain in his face. The flames on the sword lit up his darkened room; Nathan could see blue and yellow flames moving up and down the blade of the angelís sword.
On February 9, we heard on the news that the leader of the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov, had died during the night. Andropov had devoted his entire life to evil. Described by one writer as "..profoundly corrupt, a beast," Andropov had been largely responsible for the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956. He became head of the KGB secret police apparatus in 1967 and in 1982 head of the Soviet Union.
When Nathan saw the pictures of Yuri Andropov he told us that he was sure it was the man he saw bound in chains. As to who my little boy saw bound in chains in the early hours of February 9, 1984, it is most certain that one cannot prove that it was Yuri Andropov on his way to eternal misery and torment. In any event, this most unusual vision serves to remind us of what lies in store for those who live their lives in rebellion against God. Andropovís body is buried in the Kremlin Wall necropolis but where is his soul? What would Andropov have to say if he could speak to us, today?
God knows our deeds. "Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?" declares the Lord. "Do not I fill heaven and earth?" declares the Lord." Jeremiah 23:24 Those who know God best, fear him greatly. "Who is like the Lord among the heavenly beings? In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. O Lord God Almighty, who is like you?" Psalm 89:6-8 The Lord's face is against those who do evil. Christians know that they can turn to God through prayer for help. "The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry; the face of the Lord is against those who do evil," Psalm 34:15-16 If anyoneís name is not found written in the book of life, he will be cast into hell. Revelation 20:15 Hell is described by Jesus in Mark chapter 9 as a place where the fire never goes out and everyone in hell will be salted with fire. They will be tormented for ever and ever.
The Bible tells us who will be lost and who will be saved. "He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars ó their place shall be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." Revelations 21: 6-8
The Bible tells us what we must do to be saved:
1. Hear: Romans 10:14-17; Matthew 7:24-27
2. Believe: Hebrews 11:6; Mark 16:15-16; John 3:16; John 8:24; Acts 16:31
3. Repent: Acts 2:38; Acts 17:30; Luke 13:3,5
4. Confess: Matthew 10:32-33; Acts 8:36-37; Romans 10:9,10; John 12:42
5. Be baptized (immersed): Acts 2:38; Romans 6:3-6; Mark 16:15-16; Galatians 3:27; 1 Peter 3:21; Acts 8:25-40
6. Remain faithful: Revelation 2:10; Colossians 1:23; Galatians 5:4; 2 Peter 2:20-22; 1 John 1:7-9
